The Honorable Robert Lynn Evans (Bobby), former Mayor of Farmville, North Carolina, 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones Friday, April 12, 2024. A native of Farmville and a man who adored the town he served was first elected to the seat on November 30, 1997, an office he held for 20 years. During his time on the board he showed leadership by guiding Farmville’s recovery efforts from Hurricane Floyd and Irene. He established F.A.C.T.S. ( Farmville Area Schools Coming Together) and led community improvement efforts through the first ever Educational Summit in 2002 and first time Economic Summit in 2005. Bobby was vital in creating the Walk of Knowledge and he saw out his vision to build the Millennium Fountain that sits on the Town Commons a reality. It is now recognized in his honor. In 2004 he was named Farmville’s Citizen of the Year. Bobby also served as Chairman for the Pitt County Mayor’s Association in 1998 - 2000, 2003 - 2004, and 2009 - 2010. He was the Director of NC League of Municipalities from 1999 - 2001, a member of the NC League of Municipalities Risk Management Board of Trustees from 1999 - 2001 and a member of the Pitt County Education Cabinet from 2004 - 2010. Bobby served on the Farmville Dogwood Festival Committee and the Farmville Downtown Partnership for over 20 years. On December 14, 2019 Bobby was presented The Order Of The Long Leaf Pine.

Born on April 2, 1936 in Farmville, North Carolina, Bobby was the youngest child of C.L. and Esther Evans. He was a 1954 graduate of Farmville High School and received an Associate Degree in Industrial Technology from PCC and a Tax Accountant Degree from Massey Technical Institute. Bobby served in the Army from 1956 - 1958. He worked at E.I. DuPont from 1954 - 1992 as a Production Planning Specialist and later at Trade Oil Company from 1993 - 1999 as a Fuel Auditor and Environmental Compliance Manager.

Bobby was a member of Farmville First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, a Trustee, Church Moderator and taught Sunday School.

Of his many achievements, his greatest reward was in the life he built with his wife, Faye Avery who he wed on July 12, 1959. Together they raised their children Bobby Evans and Christie Weaver. Surviving are his wife Faye, son Bobby and wife Angie Evans, daughter Christie and husband Billy Weaver, Grandchildren; Will Evans, Haley Evans Freeman and husband Chase, Evan and Eden Wainwright, Great grandchildren; Skylar and Westley Evans, special others Elma Carmon and Matthew McLawhorn. Bobby was preceded in life by his father and mother, his brothers Edward Evans, Charlie “Bud” Evans, Ervin Evans, Howard “ Toot” Evans, and sister Betty “Sis” Harris and son in law Phillip Wainwright.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Farmville First Baptist Church, 3653 E. Wilson Street, Farmville with visitation to be held Monday, April 15 from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. in the Farmville First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
